Rio Vista, CA to Richmond, CA

Work Party #6

05/12/04 Wednesday Dan Withers and Royal Journey left Port Ludlow and flew to Oakland on Wednesday night, May 12 and drove to Rio Vista, CA. We stayed at the Rio Sands Hotel for the first two nights.

The planned Work party Schedule looked something like this:

  • May 13 will be
    • Open up boat and survey condition
    • Complete forward deck hatch installation
    • Complete and test Main bilge pump installation
    • Remove white plastic and general cleanup for photos
    • Design 12v Alternator bracket
    • Get fire extinguishers signed off
    • Design enclosure for lead ballast bars
  • May 14
    • Complete above projects
    • Secure starboard generator for getting underway
    • Secure pile of shelves and doors for underway
  • May 15
    • Add diesel as necessary
    • Complete necessary above projects
    • Get underway in Sacramento River for test run.
  • May 16
    • Underway and transit to Richmond
    • Tie at Bay Ship guest dock
    • Shuffle autos between locations as necessary
  • May 17
    • Noon - scheduled haul-out at Bay Yacht
    • Change out props with refurbished props on board
  • May 18
    • Meet surveyor at 10:30 for review
    • Assuming no major problems, return to water
    • Move across waterway to Sugar Dock.
    • Dan returns to Seattle in evening.

 

The Actual Schedule turned out completely different.

  • May 12 Wednesday
    • Flew to Oakland, Stayed at Rio Vista.
  • May 13 Thursday
    • Remove white plastic and general cleanup for photos.
    • Open up boat and survey condition.
    • Completed and started testing Main bilge pump installation.
    • Reviewed design of 12v alternator bracket.
    • Get offer to travel with PTF-26 from Jim West at Liberty Maritime to Port Richmond and Bay Ship and Yacht .
    • At high tide moved outside FIR and tied up with PTF-26.
    • Secure starboard generator for getting underway.
    • Secure everything for getting underway.
  • May 14 Friday
    • 05:30 Get Underway as Port side tie to PTF-26.
    • 8 hour trip from Rio Vista to Port Richmond on Port Engine, Starboard running gear had known bad vibration.
    • Secure at the guest dock at Bay Ship.
    • Met Mike Anderson strolling the dock and discovered his involvement in the last haul-out, hull cleaning and transom replacement.
    • Roxane Withers arrives Oakland to help.
    • Slept aboard vessel.
  • May 15 Saturday
    • Shuffle car from Rio Vista to Port Richmond.
    • Start building new fuel filter system.
    • Slept aboard vessel. Used shower and head on dock.
  • May 16 Sunday
    • Complete new fuel filter system.
    • Mike changed the engine freshwater cooling hoses.
    • Tested hoses and fuel filter system with running engines.
    • Slept aboard vessel. Used shower and head on dock.
  • May 17 Monday
    • 09:30 start moving boat to dock for Travel-lift.
    • She weighed 44 tons.
    • 10:30 haul out and pressure spray below waterline.
    • Set on the blocks for the work.
    • Determined projects to complete with Mike and Steve from Bay Ship.
    • Sleep at real Motel. (Oh, how wonderful!).
  • May 18 Tuesday
    • Meet surveyor, Pinkie Brennan at 10:30 for below waterline review.
    • Mike pointed out how the last project was done and the problems solved.
    • Pulled several fasteners and discussed the general integrity.
    • Create work plan for a couple of high plank repairs.
    • Agree to replace zincs all around.
    • Started pulling props and shafts to find vibration.
    • Mike found helper to start on bottom re-caulking and painting.
    • Leave town in afternoon.

Move from Rio Vista to Richmond

05/13/04 Thursday - Remove white plastic and general cleanup for photos. Open up boat and survey condition. Completed and started testing Main bilge pump installation. Reviewed design of 12v alternator bracket. Got an offer to travel with PTF-26 from Jim West at Liberty Maritime to Port Richmond and Bay Ship and Yacht. At high tide moved outside FIR and tied up with PTF-26. Secure starboard generator for getting underway. Secure everything for getting underway.

05/14/04 Friday - 05:30 Get Underway as Port side tie to PTF-26.
     
 It is an 8 hour trip from Rio Vista to Port Richmond. Running  on the Port Engine, Starboard running gear had known bad vibration. Secure at the guest dock at Bay Ship and Yacht in the early afternoon.

Met Mike Anderson strolling the dock and discovered his involvement in the last haul-out, hull cleaning and transom replacement. Mike is an avid Crashboat-AVR enthusiast and has been involved in the past restoration efforts of the 83527. He has been active with Crashboats since he was a Sea Scout at 11 and owned and operated several in the years past.

He volunteered to supervise the yard work with a helper and interface with Steve at Bay Ship for decisions about the props and shaft, as well as communicate the progress with me. We are greatly appreciative of his efforts and willingness to share his knowledge of the hull, GM/DD 671 engines and Twin Disc "crash box" transmissions.

Roxane Withers arrives Oakland to help. Slept aboard vessel.

05/15/04 Saturday Shuffled stranded car from Rio Vista to Port Richmond. Started building new fuel filter system. Slept aboard vessel. Used shower and head on dock.

05/ 16/04 Sunday - Completed new fuel filter system. Mike changed the engine freshwater cooling hoses. Tested hoses and fuel filter system with running engines. Slept aboard vessel. Used shower and head on dock.

05/17/04 Monday - 09:30 start moving boat to dock for Travel-lift. She weighed 44 tons. 10:30 hauled out and pressure spray below waterline. Set on the blocks for the work. Determined projects to complete with Mike and Steve from Bay Ship. Sleep at real Motel. (Oh, how wonderful!).

05/18/04 Tuesday - Met surveyor, Pinkie Brennan at 10:30 for below waterline review. Mike pointed out how the last project was done and the problems solved. Work Party #7

6/16/04 Wednesday - Scheduled to fly down to Oakland. Flight was cancelled, flew into San Jose and rented vehicle. Visited boat to decide what to do first. Visit Sugar Dock to arrange moorage

6/17/04 Thursday - Visited Curtis Lam at Bay Risk Insurance Brokers (Alameda) to discuss the insurance policy. Went to Bay Machine (Alameda) to review shaft building progress and meet Mike Oneill. Quoted $5855 with tax for two new shafts. Returned rental SUV, got a car.

6/18/04 Friday - Ran parts “pins” down to Bay Machinery so new ones could be built.

6/19/04 Saturday - Picked up Dan Foley to scrape and paint hull. Purchased paint supplies at Home Depot. Painted 11am-5:30pm. Installed Zincs and repaired upper rail wood piece with a 2X4.
 
6/20/04 Sunday - Picked up Dan Foley and painted the Starboard side. 10am – 6:30pm. Dan W.  scraped and caulked port side.

6/21/0404 Monday - Search for fire extinguisher repair or replacement facility. Visited Vallejo and US Army on raft and extinguishers with Mike Anderson.

6/22/04 Tuesday - Parts should be delivered. Emailed Army about surplus property.

6/23/04 Wednesday - Shafts delivered and installation started.

6/24/04 - Thursday - Installation continues on shafts and couplers. Agreed that at 1pm, Friday launch goal would be pursued. Called Greg Brazil for an idea on small crew for Friday launch. He contacted Paul H. the local Sea Scout Commander. Paul thought he might be able to get an adult and 3 scouts to help. But, time would be close as they all had to leave on Friday for LA to go work on a new boat they had acquired. Scheduled to fly back in evening. Cancelled reservation as boat is not in the water. I worked most of the day on freeing up thru-hull valves. Replaced bad faucets where necessary. Since Dan Foley could not be contacted again, I painted the port side.

6/25/04 Friday - Bay Ship installed shaft packing in morning. I patched the high bad board with ¼ plywood piece. Focused on activities that needed completed before putting the boat in the water. (valves confirmed closed, pumps ready, lines ready) Sugar Dock ready to provide 3 hands at their dock to receive us. Richard Merz agreed to come with 2 or 3 hands. Scout leader called to “pass” on helping with move. They were all heading for LA to work on a new boat for their group. Dan from Seattle at Sugar Dock would come to help on board. Launched boat about 3:15 in high winds and tied to Bay Ship guest dock. Scrambled to keep bilge pumps managed as hull expanded in the water. Things calmed down about 6:30. .

6/26/04 Saturday - Tended bilge pumps and performed general cleanup. Documented Genset, DC, and EOT circuits

6/27/04 Sunday - Continued documentation.

6/28/04 Monday - General preparation. Called “Sea Scouts” for help moving boat across the channel to Sugar Dock.

 6/29/04 Tuesday - Completed Insurance Agreement. Sea Scout group arrived in PM. Took short test run out the channel. Moved to Sugar Dock.

6/30/04 Wednesday - Continued maintenance and preparation.

7/01/04 Thursday - Applied sawdust to leak in the crew quarters. Scraped and prepared pilot house. Pressure sprayed and cleaned main deck forward.

7/2/04 Friday - Painted the Pilot House and moved props to Dicks (Richard Merz) trailer. Visited the USS Red Oak Victory ( http://richmondmuseum.org/ss-red-oak-victory/history-victory/  ) docked in Richmond.

7/3/04 Saturday Left on a 9:12am flight to Seattle
